INTERLOCK · HAMILTON

Interlock Contractor in Hamilton, Ontario

From a compact lower-city front approach to a broader Mountain backyard, a useful paving plan begins with the site rather than a pattern catalogue. We consider how people and water move between the house, street and garden before choosing a surface.

Quick answer

Interlock driveways and patios in Hamilton typically fall within $25–$45 per sq ft; walkways $20–$35 and natural stone or porcelain $35–$55. These are typical Ontario installed ranges (2026), not a Hamilton price list; your exact price comes from an on-site quote. New or widened driveway approaches need City of Hamilton review.

Site conditions

Design for the property, not just the picture

01

Older lower-city lots

Narrow passages, existing front steps and closely spaced homes can limit the equipment and stockpiling room available. A driveway layout should preserve a usable route to the door without assuming every side yard can accept a machine. We measure access before proposing removal or delivery, and plan where excavated material can leave the property.

02

The Mountain and escarpment

Changes in elevation are not decoration: a sloped approach needs transitions at the street and garage, a safe walking line, and a place for runoff to go. Near the Niagara Escarpment, rock, grade and regulated lands may change the scope. A flat-looking patio sketch cannot substitute for levels taken on site.

03

Clay and water

Some Hamilton soils retain moisture. Where clay or persistent puddling is present, the base and drainage detail deserve more attention than the visible finish. Downspouts should not discharge into a paving edge or send water toward the foundation; the outlet must be resolved before the pavers are laid.

04

Established neighbourhoods

Westdale, Dundas, Stoney Creek and Waterdown have different lot sizes and street patterns. We do not apply one citywide base or entrance layout to them. Tree roots, existing pavement, utility cuts and available front-yard planting space are property-specific constraints to examine before making a recommendation.

Neighbourhoods include Westdale, Dundas, Stoney Creek, Waterdown, Hamilton Mountain. Each address has its own grade, access and applicable approvals; a neighbourhood name is not a substitute for a site assessment.

  • A herringbone arrangement is a practical starting point for vehicle areas; border placement can define a walkway without consuming more planted front yard.
  • Where front steps meet a new drive, decide on the landing elevation first so the entry does not become an awkward collection of small risers.
  • A patio on a Mountain lot may need a grade transition, retaining edge or steps; the surface alone does not solve the slope.
Driveway approvals

Before changing a Hamilton driveway

Hamilton's Residential Driveway Access approval applies to new or widened driveway approaches, and its front-yard green-space requirements must be considered. Ancaster and the other former municipalities are governed by the City of Hamilton. For regulated escarpment or valley lands, additional review may be relevant. Check the linked City guidance and confirm current requirements with your municipality.

Hamilton's Residential Driveway Access rules and 50% front-yard green-space requirement still apply; check whether your work changes the approach.

Planning range

Compare the scope before the quote

Typical Ontario installed ranges (2026); your exact price comes from an on-site quote. These are Ontario market ranges, not city-specific rates.

SurfaceInstalled / sq ft
Interlock driveway$25–$45
Interlock patio$25–$45
Walkway or path$20–$35
Natural stone & porcelain$35–$55
Extras — quoted on site

What may change the scope here

  • Removal of aging asphalt or concrete is assessed separately because the existing thickness, disposal and access are unknown until inspected.
  • On a constrained lower-city lot, hand access and staging can matter more than square footage. On a slope, excavation and drainage may matter more than colour.
  • Permeable paving is quoted on site: clay and outlet conditions must be assessed rather than assuming every property can infiltrate runoff.
The sequence

From site visit to a finished edge

01

First, walk the actual route from curb to garage and from door to garden, recording grades, downspouts and access restrictions. A property survey and utility locations help set safe boundaries.

02

Next, establish finished elevations and a drainage destination; select paving for vehicle or pedestrian loads before deciding the border and pattern. Arrange Ontario One Call locates before excavation.

03

Then remove the existing surface as scoped, prepare a compacted granular base in lifts, screed bedding and place the selected pavers. Edges and compatible joint material complete the assembly.

04

Finally, review the transitions at the curb, steps and house. A walkthrough should account for where snow will be stored and how the surface will be cleaned without disturbing joints.

Material selection

Materials we install

We install Techo-Bloc, Unilock and Permacon concrete pavers; natural stone and outdoor-rated porcelain are other choices for pedestrian surfaces. The right product depends on the intended load, finish and its maker's installation details. A driveway design should not automatically inherit a patio slab specification.

Looking after the surface

In winter, use a plastic-edged shovel or blade where suitable and check the paver maker's de-icer guidance. Keep joints and drainage outlets clear, especially where a downspout crosses the approach. If pavers settle near an old utility trench, diagnose the base before adding more joint sand.

The whole yard

Pair paving with other work

Discuss elevations, gate clearance and lighting sleeves before laying a patio or entry path so new work meets the rest of the landscape cleanly.

Common questions answered

Local answers

Hamilton interlock questions

Can I widen my Hamilton driveway with interlock?

A new or widened approach needs Residential Driveway Access review. Front-yard green-space rules apply as well. Confirm the current limits with the City before changing a curb or boulevard.

Does a Mountain patio need a retaining wall?

Only if the measured grade and desired finished level call for one. Steps or a revised patio location may be better; assess drainage and access first.

Will a narrow Westdale lot rule out a new walkway?

Not necessarily. We measure the route and entry clearance, then choose dimensions and a delivery method that fit the actual property.

Is permeable paving suitable for Hamilton clay?

Sometimes an underdrain or overflow is needed when infiltration is limited. Soil and safe outlet are assessed on site; a permeable surface alone is not a drainage plan.

Can old Hamilton driveway asphalt be removed?

Removal can be included in a site-specific quote after checking thickness, access and disposal. It is not included as a fixed add-on rate here.

What is the typical installed range for a Hamilton walkway?

The typical Ontario installed range (2026) is $20–$35 per sq ft for walkways. Your exact price comes from an on-site quote, including any grading and removal.

Which pattern suits a vehicle driveway?

Herringbone is commonly chosen for vehicle use when paired with the right paver thickness, compacted base and edge restraint. Pattern alone cannot compensate for poor preparation.
