Gas Fire Pits in Hamilton, Burlington & Oakville

A built-in gas fire pit gives you a flame without smoke or sparks. We build the base, walls and vents, and a licensed gas technician runs the line.

Locate, then dig + trench

Step 1 of 6 — Lay out, locate and dig

Utilities are located first (Ontario One Call), then we dig the pit base and the trench for the gas line.

Quick answer

Gas fire pits are allowed without a burn permit in Hamilton and Burlington, urban and rural; Burlington excludes apartment balconies and condos whose rules forbid them. The line is run by a licensed gas technician from a TSSA-registered contractor, and the burner is certified to ANSI Z21.97 / CSA 2.41. A custom natural gas pit runs $3,000–$6,000 (Project Landscaping, May 2026).

Step by step

How we build a gas fire pit

Locate, then dig + trench

Step 1 of 6 — Lay out, locate and dig

  1. Utilities are located first (Ontario One Call), then we dig the pit base and the trench for the gas line.

  2. A compacted gravel base keeps the structure level and lets water drain out of the enclosure.

  3. A licensed gas technician from a TSSA-registered contractor runs and pressure-tests the line, with a shut-off valve you can reach easily.

  4. The enclosure gets vents on opposite sides so gas can't collect inside. The burner maker's manual sets the size and position (low for propane, high for natural gas).

  5. A stainless burner pan and a burner system certified for outdoor use (CSA/ANSI Z21.97 – CSA 2.41) sit on top, at the clearances its manual lists.

  6. Media goes over the burner and the system is tested. No smoke or sparks, and gas fire pits are allowed without a burn permit in Hamilton and Burlington.

Approximate arithmetic: 1 m³ natural gas ≈ 35,000–37,000 Btu; a 65,000 Btu/h burner on high ≈ 1.8 m³/h. A 20 lb propane cylinder holds roughly 430,000 Btu.

Ignition options

Match-lit ignition costs less than electronic or app ignition (Project Landscaping, May 2026). We match the ignition to the burner system you choose.

Roof edge, pergola or branchOverhead: 72 in (1.8 m)48 in (1.2 m)48 in (1.2 m)FenceHouseNon-combustible patio
Example only. One certified gas fire table’s manual lists 48 in (1.2 m) to the sides and rear and 72 in (1.8 m) overhead. HPC Fire recommends 84 in (2.1 m) above burners under 200,000 Btu/h. Your burner’s manual and the code set the real numbers, and we use whichever is larger. Never in an enclosed space.
  • The enclosure gets at least two vents on opposite sides — about 18 sq in each (36 sq in total) is a common minimum, and the burner manual governs. Vents go low for propane and high for natural gas; bottom vents can double as drainage (The Magic of Fire, Oct 2026).

By-laws

Rules in your city

Hamilton (incl. Ancaster, Dundas, Stoney Creek, Waterdown)

Open Air Burning By-law 02-283

Gas ✓ Allowed

Outdoor propane or natural gas fire pits are allowed in both rural and urban areas without an Open Air Burning Permit (City of Hamilton, July 2021).

Burlington

Open-air Burning By-law 065-2019

Gas ✓ Allowed

Propane or natural gas fire tables, bowls and similar devices are permitted, but not on apartment balconies or where condo rules prohibit them. The City discourages use during smog advisories or dry weather.

Oakville

Open Burning By-law 2006-174

Gas ✓ Allowed

Allowed. The by-law's burning conditions are written for wood and charcoal; natural gas and propane barbecues need no permit if supervised and on non-flammable material (s. 2.3). Burner placement follows its certified manual.

Rules change and burn bans happen in dry weather; check with your fire department before lighting.

  • Match-lit ignition costs less than electronic or app ignition.
  • Distance from the gas meter adds pipe and trenching.

Gas fire pits FAQ

Do I need a permit for a gas fire pit?

Not a burn permit in Hamilton or Burlington: Hamilton allows propane and natural gas fire pits in urban and rural areas without an Open Air Burning Permit (July 2021), and Burlington permits gas fire tables and bowls. The gas line work has its own permit fee, typically $75–$150 and usually included in the quote (EcoFrost, Oct 2026).

Can I convert my wood fire pit to gas?

Sometimes. A gas conversion needs a burner certified to ANSI Z21.97 / CSA 2.41, vents on opposite sides of the enclosure, a reachable shut-off valve, the clearances in the burner manual and a gas line from a licensed technician. We check on site whether your existing pit can take all of that or needs rebuilding.

How far from the house does a gas fire pit need to be?

Clearances come from the appliance manual and code, and the larger one applies. As examples, one certified gas fire table's manual lists 48 in at the sides and rear and 72 in overhead, and HPC Fire recommends 84 in above burners under 200,000 Btu/h. Gas fire pits never go in enclosed spaces.

Can the propane tank sit inside the enclosure?

Only where the burner manual allows it, with venting to suit. Propane sinks, so the vents go low. Spare cylinders should be kept away from the unit, outdoors, ventilated and out of the sun (fire table manual). A 20 lb cylinder lasts about 6.5 hours at 65,000 Btu/h on high (approximate).

Can I use a gas fire pit in winter?

Hamilton's and Burlington's rules for gas fire pits don't set a season. Follow the burner manual, keep vents and drainage clear, and note that Burlington discourages gas fire features during smog advisories or dry weather. We plan bottom vents so they can double as drainage.

Does a gas fire pit give off heat like wood?

Heat depends on the burner's Btu/h input, which certification testing establishes along with its clearances (Intertek). A wood fire's heat changes with the fire. We size the burner with you and lay out seating at the clearances its manual lists.

Who runs the gas line?

A licensed gas technician working for a TSSA-registered contractor. DIY gas line work isn't allowed in Ontario (EcoFrost Heating, Oct 2026). Distance from the meter adds pipe and trenching: each extra 10 ft costs about $50–$120 and underground trenching may add $300–$800 (EcoFrost, Oct 2026).

How long does a gas fire pit install take?

It depends on the design and gas line run; we give a schedule with the quote. Utilities are located first through Ontario One Call, then the base, walls, line, burner and media go in, and the system is tested before you light it.
