Garden Fountains in Hamilton, Burlington & Oakville

A fountain is the smallest way to add moving water. It sits over a hidden basin, so it fits beside a patio, at an entrance or in a small yard.

Small basin

Step 1 of 6 — Dig a small basin

A small basin is dug where the fountain will sit.

Quick answer

A compact urn or sphere fountain (bubbler) costs from about $3,500 CAD installed in Ontario (Perfect Yard Landscape, 2026) and takes 1–2 days. Water rises through the feature and drains into a hidden basin of rock. The pump needs a GFCI-protected outlet (Rule 26-704), and the fountain is drained and the pump stored for winter.

Step by step

How we build a fountain

Small basin

Step 1 of 6 — Dig a small basin

  1. A small basin is dug where the fountain will sit.

  2. The basin is lined and a pump sits in it, with power from a GFCI-protected outdoor outlet.

  3. A steel grate spans the basin to carry the weight of the urn or stone.

  4. The urn, drilled boulder or basalt column sits on the grate with the supply pipe running up through it.

  5. River rock hides the grate and the hidden basin underneath.

  6. Water bubbles over the urn, runs into the rock and drains back to the hidden basin to be pumped up again.

Styles

Fountain types

  • Urn: A glazed or stone vessel; water bubbles over the rim into a hidden basin of river rock.
  • Drilled boulder: A natural boulder cored through the middle so water wells up and runs down its face.
  • Basalt column: One or more cut stone columns with water spilling from the top.
  • Sphere: A round stone ball with water sheeting over it from a top opening.

Where it goes

Small yards & patios

  • A bubbler needs little more than the feature and a small rock basin, so it fits beside a patio, at an entrance or in a planting bed.
  • Moving water helps with mosquitoes: public health units advise refreshing water features often (Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph Public Health).
  • Winter: fountains are drained and the pump stored (Perfect Yard Landscape).

Power

Pump power & GFCI

  • Canadian/Ontario Electrical Code Rule 26-704: all 15 A and 20 A receptacles within 2.5 m of finished grade need Class A GFCI protection.
  • New outdoor circuits and receptacles are installed by a Licensed Electrical Contractor, who files an ESA notification.

The same ESA rules apply around pools; see pool electrical safety.

Fountains FAQ

How much does a garden fountain cost in Ontario?

Perfect Yard Landscape lists a compact urn or sphere fountain (bubbler) from about $3,500 CAD installed (2026). US figures: fountains $1,500–$5,000 and boulder or basalt bubblers $3,500–$9,000 (Landscapio, May 2026, USD).

What kinds of fountains are there?

The common ones are urns, drilled boulders, basalt columns and spheres. Each sits over a hidden basin filled with rock, and a pump sends water up through the feature so it bubbles or sheets over the stone.

Will a fountain fit on a small patio?

Usually. A bubbler takes up little more than the feature and a small rock basin around it, so it fits beside a patio, an entrance or a planting bed. We plan where the outlet and the basin go first.

What power does a fountain need?

A GFCI-protected outlet. Ontario Electrical Code Rule 26-704 requires Class A GFCI protection on 15 A and 20 A receptacles within 2.5 m of finished grade. New outdoor circuits are installed by a Licensed Electrical Contractor with an ESA notification.

What does a fountain cost to run?

Watts × hours ÷ 1,000 × your rate. A 50 W pump running 24 hours uses 36 kWh a month, about $4.32 at the 12.0¢ tiered rate (OEB, from Nov 1 2025). Energy charge only, before delivery and regulatory charges and HST.

Do I need to winterize a fountain?

Yes. Fountains are drained and the pump stored over winter (Perfect Yard Landscape). That protects the pump and the feature from freezing water.

Do fountains attract mosquitoes?

Moving water helps. Public health advice is to refresh bird baths and water features often to cut mosquito breeding (Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph Public Health), and a fountain keeps the water circulating while it runs.

Is a fountain a pool under the by-law?

A bubbler stores its water in a rock-filled basin, so there's no open, deep water. Hamilton's and Oakville's pool rules focus on water more than about 0.6 m deep, which is why fountains and pondless features avoid the issue.
