Corner visibility triangle: 5.4 m legs. Driveway visibility triangle: 2.7 m legs. A privacy-screen section up to 2.4 m may be allowed when no longer than 4.5 m, at least 1.2 m from a side lot line and at least 3.0 m from the rear lot line. Do I need a permit to build a fence?
A standard residential boundary fence may not need a building permit, but zoning, visibility and pool-enclosure rules still apply. Hamilton requires a building permit for a pool enclosure under Pool Enclosure By-law 16-184. Confirm current rules with your municipality before building.
What is the maximum fence height in Hamilton?
Hamilton Fence By-law 10-142 generally permits up to 2.0 m, with a 0.9 m limit within specified front-lot and visibility areas. A limited 2.4 m privacy-screen exception has setback and length conditions. Confirm current rules with your municipality before building.
What is the maximum fence height in Oakville or Burlington?
Oakville Fence By-law 2002-034 allows up to 2.0 m outside the front yard; the front yard is limited to 1.5 m and anything above 1.0 m must be open lattice. Burlington zoning generally permits about 2.0 m in rear and side yards with lower front-yard and visibility limits. Confirm current rules with your municipality before building.

Is cedar better than pressure-treated wood?
Cedar offers richer natural colour, lighter weight and a premium appearance. Pressure-treated wood is the more affordable, widely chosen privacy option. Both need thoughtful detailing and ongoing finish decisions; the right choice depends on budget and the look of the yard.
What is the best low-maintenance fence?
Vinyl, aluminum and composite are the leading low-maintenance options. Vinyl provides full privacy, aluminum is ideal where an open or modern metal look is wanted, and composite combines privacy with a premium contemporary finish.
How deep should fence posts be in Southern Ontario?
Our standard is about 4 ft (1.2 m) deep, below local frost depth, with posts set in concrete. This helps resist movement from Southern Ontario freeze–thaw cycles.
Who pays for a fence between neighbours?
Ontario's Line Fences Act can provide fence-viewer arbitration where it applies, but it cannot determine where the property line is. Oakville Division Fence By-law 2023-076 sets its own shared-cost process. Start with a survey and a clear neighbour conversation.
How long does residential fence installation take?
Most residential fences take about 1–3 days to install after the property line, bylaw questions and utility locates are resolved. Larger, sloped or gate-heavy layouts can take longer.
What fence is best for dogs or a sloped yard?
Pressure-treated wood, vinyl and composite offer privacy and containment; black vinyl-coated chain link is a practical open option. On slopes, the fence can be stepped or panels can be racked to follow the grade while controlling gaps.
