Vinyl Liner Pool Installation in Hamilton, Burlington & Oakville

A vinyl liner pool is built on site from wall panels, a concrete collar and a troweled floor, finished with a custom-fitted liner. Antoine installs vinyl liner pools and builds the landscape around them, as one project with one point of contact.

Quick answer

Vinyl liner pools have a typical market range of $55,000–$110,000 installed (HomeStars Ontario, Aug 2026), the lowest entry price of the three types. They build in a few weeks (MoneySense, Jun 2024). The liner is replaced every 7–10 years at $4,500–$6,500 (HomeStars, Aug 2026), and liners are sold in 20–30 mil thicknesses.

Best for

  • The lowest entry price: $55k–$110k (HomeStars, Aug 2026)
  • Custom sizes and shapes built from wall panels on site (Latham install guide)
  • Salt systems with polymer walls, which "work well with salt systems" (Latham)
  • A build of a few weeks (MoneySense, Jun 2024)

May not suit

  • The liner is replaced every 7–10 years at $4,500–$6,500 (HomeStars, Aug 2026)
  • River Pools says most liners last about 5–9 years regardless of thickness
  • A few inches of groundwater pressure can blister a liner (AQUA Magazine)
  • Steel or aluminum walls can degrade in moist ground (AQUA)
  • A poured grout floor can crack in freeze-thaw conditions (AQUA Magazine 2021)

Step by step

How a vinyl liner pool goes in

How a vinyl liner pool gets built

How to read this: A side view of the pool in the ground. Step through to watch it being built, layer by layer.

New: Excavation
  1. The hole is dug to the pool shape with the deep-end hopper, after a free Ontario One Call locate.

  2. Galvanized steel or polymer wall panels are bolted together around the hole (Latham install guide).

  3. The panels are braced and levelled so the coping track sits true all the way round (Latham install guide).

  4. A poured concrete collar locks the base of the walls in place (Latham install guide).

  5. A floor of about 2 in is troweled smooth; vermiculite-cement is "more forgiving in freeze-thaw climates" (AQUA Magazine 2021).

  6. The custom liner, 20–30 mil, hangs from an aluminum coping track and is pulled tight against the walls and floor (Latham; River Pools).

  7. Water goes in once the permanent enclosure has passed inspection, as all three cities require.

  8. Coping and the pool deck finish the edge, sequenced around the electrician's bonding inspection.

Step 1 of 8 — Excavate

Step through the layers, from excavation to the finished deck.

Industry practice; many details from US manufacturers and trade bodies.

Layers

Inside the walls

Inside a pool's wall and floor

How to read this: A side view of the pool wall and floor, cut in half. Tap a layer to read what it is; the numbered list says the same thing.

  1. Native soil. Excavated to the pool shape with the deep-end hopper.
  2. Wall panels and braces. Galvanized steel or polymer panels, braced and levelled. Polymer walls don't rust.
  3. Concrete collar. Poured around the base of the walls to lock them in place.
  4. Troweled floor. About 2 in; vermiculite-cement is more forgiving in freeze-thaw climates.
  5. Liner. Custom-fitted vinyl, 20–30 mil.
  6. Coping track. Aluminum coping track that holds the liner bead.
  7. Deck. Pavers or concrete over the collar.

Based on industry practice; not Ontario code. Not to scale.

Each pool type is built up from different layers, shown here from the bottom up.

Closing and freeze-thaw

Ontario winters

  • Don't drain a vinyl liner pool: a few inches of groundwater pressure can blister a liner (AQUA Magazine, "Pressure Points").
  • Polymer walls don't rust; steel or aluminum walls can degrade in moist ground (AQUA).
  • Close in October: lower the water below the skimmer or tile line without draining, blow out the lines and add antifreeze, drain the equipment and fit a tight cover (Carson Dunlop, Sep 2024; Co-operators).
  • Freeze damage from improper winter closing is generally excluded from insurance (BrokerLink, Jun 2026).

Vinyl liner pool FAQ

How much does a vinyl liner pool cost in Ontario?

HomeStars' Ontario guide (Aug 2026) puts installed vinyl liner pools at $55,000–$110,000, the lowest entry price of the three types. MoneySense (Jun 2024) reports $60,000–$100,000 and Hamilton's Devine Image (Apr 2026) $60,000–$90,000. These are typical market ranges; your exact price comes from an on-site quote.

How long does a pool liner last?

Sources disagree. HomeStars (Aug 2026) says liners are replaced every 7–10 years and MoneySense (Jun 2024) says 8–10 years. River Pools, a US manufacturer, says most vinyl liners last about 5 to 9 years regardless of thickness. Water chemistry, sun and winter closing all affect how long yours lasts.

What does a replacement pool liner cost?

HomeStars (Aug 2026) puts a vinyl liner replacement at $4,500–$6,500. Over a 30-year ownership period that cost typically comes up three or four times, depending on how long each liner lasts. The liner timeline on this page shows the illustrative total for a 7, 8.5 or 10 year interval.

Is a 30 mil liner better than a 20 mil liner?

A thicker liner resists punctures better, but River Pools says most vinyl liners last about 5 to 9 years regardless of thickness. Liners are sold in 20–30 mil. When comparing quotes, ask for the thickness in mils rather than gauge, because gauge is not a consistent measurement between manufacturers (River Pools, May 2026).

Are steel or polymer pool walls better?

Both are used. Polymer walls don't rust, while steel or aluminum walls can degrade in moist ground, according to AQUA Magazine. Latham notes polymer walls work well with salt systems. Galvanized steel walls remain common; the right choice depends on your soil, groundwater and whether you plan a salt system.

Can I use a salt system with a vinyl liner pool?

Yes. Salt works with all three pool types when water chemistry is managed, and Latham says polymer walls work well with salt systems. Salt system equipment runs $1,000–$3,000 (MoneySense, Jun 2024), and Orange Pools (Jul 2026) puts yearly salt costs at $240–$480 versus $600–$960 for chlorine.

Can I drain a vinyl liner pool?

Avoid it. AQUA Magazine reports that a few inches of groundwater pressure can blister a vinyl liner once the water inside is gone, and the risk peaks during snowmelt and storms. For winter, lower the water below the skimmer without draining, blow out the lines, add antifreeze and fit a tight cover.

How long does a vinyl liner pool take to build?

MoneySense (Jun 2024) says a vinyl liner pool takes a few weeks to build. A typical whole project, from design through permits, construction, the enclosure inspection and landscaping, runs 8–12 weeks according to Ontario builders Edgewater Pools and Oakville's Finest Pools.
