Pondless Waterfalls in Hamilton, Burlington & Oakville

A pondless waterfall gives you the sound of falling water over natural stone, with the water stored out of sight in a rock-filled basin. It's the water feature we suggest most for family yards.

Basin + stream channel

Step 1 of 6 — Dig the basin and stream

A basin is dug at the bottom and a stream channel runs up to where the waterfall will start.

Quick answer

A pondless waterfall recirculates water from a rock-filled basin underground, so there's no open, deep water. The pump sits in a vault in the basin; size it at about 1,500 US gallons per hour per foot of waterfall width (Aquascape). Builds take 2–4 days (Perfect Yard Landscape, 2026), and the pump is drained and stored for winter.

Step by step

How we build a pondless waterfall

Basin + stream channel

Step 1 of 6 — Dig the basin and stream

  1. A basin is dug at the bottom and a stream channel runs up to where the waterfall will start.

  2. Geotextile underlayment and an EPDM liner line both the basin and the stream so no water is lost.

  3. A pump vault stands in the basin so the pump can be reached from the surface. The return line runs up to the top of the stream.

  4. The basin is filled with rock and gravel. The water is stored out of sight between the stones.

  5. A spillway starts the waterfall and boulders and river rock shape the stream.

  6. Water spills down the stream and disappears into the rock. There's no open pond, so no deep standing water.

Safety

Why pondless suits family yards

There's no open water. The water is stored in the rock-filled basin below the surface, the waterfall drains back through the rock, and the pump sits in a vault you open for upkeep. That also keeps it clear of the pond depth rules in Hamilton and Oakville's pool by-laws.

Pump size & running cost

Pump sizer

Worked example: a 2 ft waterfall needs a 3,000 GPH pump.

Look for a pump rated about 3,000 US GPH (11,355 L/h) at the height it has to lift.

Aquascape's residential rule of thumb: 1,500 gallons per hour for each foot of waterfall width (about 19,000 L/h per metre). Pump output drops as the lift height increases. We size the pump to your design.

Pondless waterfalls FAQ

Is a pondless waterfall safe for kids?

It has no open, deep water: the water is stored in a rock-filled basin below the surface, and the waterfall runs over stone into that basin. That's why it avoids the pond depth issue in Hamilton and Oakville's pool by-laws.

How does a pondless waterfall work?

A lined basin is filled with rock, with a pump vault inside it. The pump sends water up a hidden pipe to the top of the waterfall; it runs down the stream and drains back through the rock into the basin. The cycle repeats while the pump runs.

What size pump do I need?

About 1,500 US gallons per hour for each foot of waterfall width (Aquascape), or about 19,000 L/h per metre. A 2 ft waterfall needs a 3,000 GPH pump. Pump output drops with lift height, so we size it to the actual design.

What does it cost to run?

A 150 W pump running 24 hours uses about 108 kWh a month, around $12.96 at a 12.0¢ tiered rate (OEB, from Nov 1 2025), energy charge only. Angi puts pump and lighting electricity at $120–$360 a year (May 2026, USD).

What happens in winter?

Pondless features are drained and the pump is stored over winter (Perfect Yard Landscape). Seasonal start-up and winterizing services run $100–$300 a year in US data (Angi, May 2026, USD).

How long does it take to build?

Perfect Yard Landscape puts a pondless waterfall at 2–4 days in Ontario (2026). Underground lines are located first through Ontario One Call, then we dig the basin, line it, set the vault and rock, and build the stream.

What does a pondless waterfall cost?

US data (Angi, May 2026, USD): average $7,000, most $4,000–$10,000; small under 6 ft $4,000–$7,000; medium 6–12 ft $7,000–$10,000; large $10,000–$15,000+. An 8–12 ft pondless stream runs $6,000–$12,000 (Landscapio, May 2026). Ontario quotes vary.

What upkeep does it need?

Mostly the pump vault: keeping it clear and topping up water. Professional maintenance runs $150–$400 a visit in US data (Angi, May 2026, USD). Keeping the water moving also helps with mosquitoes.
