Quick answer

Fibreglass pools have a typical market range of $65,000–$120,000 installed (HomeStars Ontario, Aug 2026). Expect about a week of site work and 3–6 weeks to a finished project with coping, patio and fence. The gelcoat is refinished every 20–30 years, up to $15,000 (MoneySense, Jun 2024). Never drain a fibreglass pool fully, because groundwater can float the shell.

Fit

Is a fibreglass pool right for you?

Best for

  • The shortest site schedule: about a week of site work (MoneySense; River Pools)
  • A factory-made gelcoat surface refinished only every 20–30 years (MoneySense, Jun 2024)
  • The lowest seasonal running cost of the three: up to $1,800 (MoneySense, Jun 2024)
  • Salt systems, when calcium hardness stays below 120 ppm (AQUA, Sep 2025)
  • Yards with crane or truck access for the shell

May not suit

  • Highway limits cap most shells at about 16 ft wide and 40 ft long (River Pools)
  • Never drain fully: a couple of inches of groundwater head can float the shell (AQUA Magazine)
  • Narrow side yards can need a crane lift over the house: +$2,000–$5,000 (Boulder Design, Feb 2026)
  • Gelcoat refinish can cost up to $15,000 (MoneySense, Jun 2024)

Step by step

How a fibreglass pool goes in

How a fibreglass pool gets built

How to read this: A side view of the pool in the ground. Step through to watch it being built, layer by layer.

New: Over-dig
  1. The shell's outline is marked and the hole is dug slightly larger than the shell, after a free Ontario One Call locate.

  2. About 2 in of compacted gravel is levelled under the shell (Leisure Pools USA).

  3. The factory shell is lifted in by crane and set level. Highway limits cap most shells at about 16 ft wide and 40 ft long (River Pools).

  4. The shell is plumbed, then gravel backfill goes in as the shell takes on water so pressure stays balanced on both sides (Leisure Pools USA). An 8 in (203 mm) groundwater pipe is typically set in the deep end (Pool & Spa Marketing, 2012).

  5. About 8 in of rebar-reinforced concrete is poured around the perimeter to lock the top of the shell (Leisure Pools USA).

  6. Coping, the pool deck and the enclosure fence follow, sequenced around the electrician's bonding inspection.

Step 1 of 6 — Lay out and over-dig

Step through the layers, from excavation to the finished deck.

Layers

Inside the walls

Inside a pool's wall and floor

How to read this: A side view of the pool wall and floor, cut in half. Tap a layer to read what it is; the numbered list says the same thing.

  1. Native soil. Over-dug and levelled to the shell's footprint.
  2. Compacted gravel base. About 2 in of compacted gravel under the shell.
  3. Shell. Gelcoat, vinyl-ester barrier coat, chopped-glass and polyester laminate with woven roving at stress points, then ribs.
  4. Gravel backfill. Placed as the shell takes on water so pressure stays balanced; the site stays behind temporary fencing until the permanent enclosure passes inspection.
  5. Bond beam. About 8 in of rebar-reinforced concrete around the perimeter.
  6. Coping. Paver, stone or poured edge over the bond beam.
  7. Deck. Pavers or concrete sloped away from the water.

Based on industry practice; not Ontario code. Not to scale.

Each pool type is built up from different layers, shown here from the bottom up.

Pool full

With the pool full, the weight of the water inside balances groundwater pushing up from below.

  • Pool full: With the pool full, the weight of the water inside balances groundwater pushing up from below.
  • Drained in spring: Drained while groundwater rises during snowmelt or storms, a couple of inches of differential head can float a fibreglass shell (AQUA Magazine, "Pressure Points").
  • Relief pipe: An 8 in (203 mm) groundwater pipe set in the deep end lets water around the shell be pumped down (Pool & Spa Marketing, 2012). The rule stays the same: never drain a fibreglass pool fully.
Never fully drain a fibreglass pool: groundwater pushing up can float the shell.

Closing and freeze-thaw

Ontario winters

  • Never drain a fibreglass pool fully. A couple of inches of differential groundwater head can float the shell (AQUA Magazine, "Pressure Points").
  • Danger peaks when a pool is drained while groundwater rises during snowmelt or storms; a relief pipe or well point lets water be pumped down instead.
  • Close in October: lower the water below the skimmer or tile line without draining, blow out the lines and add antifreeze, drain the equipment and fit a tight cover (Carson Dunlop, Sep 2024; Co-operators).
  • Freeze damage from improper winter closing is generally excluded from insurance (BrokerLink, Jun 2026).

Fibreglass pool FAQ

How much does a fibreglass pool cost in Ontario?

HomeStars' Ontario guide (Aug 2026) puts installed fibreglass pools at $65,000–$120,000. MoneySense (Jun 2024) reports $70,000–$120,000 and Hamilton's Devine Image (Apr 2026) $80,000–$130,000. Fencing, decking and landscaping commonly push the full project 40–60% higher (Devine Image). These are typical market ranges; your exact price comes from an on-site quote.

How long does a fibreglass pool take to install?

Site work for the shell itself takes about a week, and a finished project with coping, patio and fence takes about 3–6 weeks, according to MoneySense and River Pools. Design, permits and the enclosure inspection add time before and after, and a typical whole project runs 8–12 weeks from design to finish.

Can a fibreglass pool pop out of the ground?

Yes, if it is drained while groundwater is high. AQUA Magazine reports that a couple of inches of differential head can float a fibreglass shell, and the risk peaks during snowmelt or storms. That is why an 8 in groundwater pipe is typically set in the deep end and why a fibreglass pool should never be fully drained.

Can I drain my fibreglass pool for winter?

No. Close it by lowering the water below the skimmer without draining, blowing out the lines, adding antifreeze, draining the equipment and fitting a tight cover. Fully draining a fibreglass pool risks groundwater floating the shell. Freeze damage from improper winter closing is generally excluded from insurance (BrokerLink, Jun 2026).

How big can a fibreglass pool be?

Shells are made in a factory and trucked to your home, so highway limits cap most at about 16 ft wide and 40 ft long, according to River Pools. If you want something larger or an unusual shape, a vinyl liner or concrete pool is built on site and isn't limited by transport.

Does salt damage a fibreglass pool?

No source we found supports the claim that salt damages fibreglass. Salt systems work with all three pool types when chemistry is managed. For fibreglass, AQUA (Sep 2025) advises keeping calcium hardness below 120 ppm and avoiding Cal-Hypo shock. Salt system equipment runs $1,000–$3,000 (MoneySense, Jun 2024).

How long does fibreglass gelcoat last?

MoneySense (Jun 2024) says fibreglass gelcoat is refinished every 20–30 years, at a cost of up to $15,000. That is the longest surface cycle of the three pool types, compared with vinyl liners every 7–10 years and concrete replastering every 10–12 years.

Can a fibreglass pool fit into a narrow yard?

Often, but the shell has to get there. Boulder Design (Feb 2026) notes narrow side yards can need a crane lift over the house, which adds $2,000–$5,000. Access is one of the first things we check at the on-site consultation, along with overhead wires, trees and where the crane can set up.
