Fibreglass vs Vinyl vs Concrete Pools: Which Suits Ontario?

Quick answer

Vinyl liner costs least upfront but needs a new liner every 7–10 years; fibreglass costs more but installs fastest and has the lowest seasonal running cost; concrete offers full design freedom at the highest price and longest build. In Ontario, groundwater and freeze-thaw matter: never fully drain fibreglass, and concrete's weak points are the tile line and coping.

How is each pool type built?

Industry practice (many sources are US manufacturers, not Ontario code): a fibreglass shell is craned onto about 2 in of compacted gravel and backfilled with gravel while it fills with water, then locked with an ~8 in rebar bond beam (Leisure Pools USA). Vinyl walls are braced, levelled and locked with a poured concrete collar, with a troweled ~2 in floor (Latham). Concrete is sprayed over a rebar cage, typically 6–8 in walls and at least 9 in floors (EngineerFix, Dec 2025). The cross-section below shows the layers.

Which type costs least over 20 years?

Upfront price and lifetime cost rank differently. Vinyl's liner replacements and concrete's acid washes and replastering add up; fibreglass has the longest surface cycle. The lifecycle chart below is an illustrative estimate, not a quote, built from the dated ranges.

Who does each pool type suit?

  • Fibreglass: owners who want a fast install, low chemical use and a shape from a catalogue, with access for a crane or a wide side yard.
  • Vinyl liner: budget-first owners who want a custom shape and accept a liner change every 7–10 years.
  • Concrete: owners who want a specific shape, depth or finish and can wait 2–3 months for the build.

Does salt damage fibreglass pools?

No source we reviewed supports that claim. Salt works with all three types if the chemistry is managed, and polymer vinyl walls "work well with salt systems" (Latham). For fibreglass, AQUA advises keeping calcium hardness below 120 ppm and not shocking with Cal-Hypo (AQUA, Sep 2025).

Inside a pool's wall and floor

How to read this: A side view of the pool wall and floor, cut in half. Tap a layer to read what it is; the numbered list says the same thing.

  1. Native soil. Over-dug and levelled to the shell's footprint.
  2. Compacted gravel base. About 2 in of compacted gravel under the shell.
  3. Shell. Gelcoat, vinyl-ester barrier coat, chopped-glass and polyester laminate with woven roving at stress points, then ribs.
  4. Gravel backfill. Placed as the shell takes on water so pressure stays balanced; the site stays behind temporary fencing until the permanent enclosure passes inspection.
  5. Bond beam. About 8 in of rebar-reinforced concrete around the perimeter.
  6. Coping. Paver, stone or poured edge over the bond beam.
  7. Deck. Pavers or concrete sloped away from the water.

Based on industry practice; not Ontario code. Not to scale.

Each pool type is built up from different layers, shown here from the bottom up.

How to read this: Each line shows the running total a pool type could cost to own, year by year. Lower is cheaper. Change the years or the liner interval to update it.

Frequently asked questions

Which pool type is best for Ontario winters?

All three work in Ontario when they are closed correctly. Fibreglass must never be fully drained because groundwater can float the shell. Vinyl floors made with vermiculite-cement are more forgiving in freeze-thaw (AQUA, 2021). Concrete's weak points are the tile line, coping and mortar beds (Shotcrete, Q2 2025).

Is fibreglass or vinyl cheaper in the long run?

Vinyl usually costs less upfront, at $55k–$110k versus $65k–$120k for fibreglass (HomeStars, Aug 2026). But a vinyl liner is replaced every 7–10 years at $4,500–$6,500, while fibreglass gelcoat is refinished every 20–30 years (MoneySense, 2024). Over 20 years the gap narrows or reverses depending on liner life.

How long does each pool type take to build?

Fibreglass site work takes about one week, with 3–6 weeks to a finished project including coping, patio and fence (MoneySense; River Pools). Vinyl liner takes a few weeks (MoneySense). Concrete takes 2–3 months before permits and inspections (Orange Pools, Jul 2026). Permits add their own review time before any digging starts.

Can I get any shape with a fibreglass pool?

No. Fibreglass shells come in factory shapes, and highway transport limits cap most shells at about 16 ft wide and 40 ft long (River Pools). Vinyl liner pools allow custom shapes and liner patterns, and concrete allows any shape, depth or finish, at a higher price and a longer build.

Does salt water ruin a fibreglass pool?

No source we reviewed supports that. Salt systems work with fibreglass, vinyl and concrete when chemistry is managed. For fibreglass, AQUA recommends keeping calcium hardness below 120 ppm and avoiding Cal-Hypo shock (AQUA, Sep 2025). Salt system equipment runs about $1,000–$3,000 (MoneySense, 2024).

Which pool type costs the most to run each season?

MoneySense estimates seasonal running costs of up to $1,800 for fibreglass ($325 chemicals), up to $2,000 for vinyl liner ($475) and up to $2,500 for concrete ($695) (Jun 2024). Concrete's porous plaster uses more chemicals, and it needs an acid wash every 3–5 years at about $2,000.
