What Does a Pool Cost to Run in Ontario?

Quick answer

Expect up to $1,800–$2,500 a season depending on pool type (MoneySense, Jun 2024), plus $500–$2,000 a year for opening and closing (Boulder Design, Feb 2026). Hydro and gas for pumps and heaters run $1,200–$2,800 a year. A cover saves 50–70% of heating (US DOE), and a heat pump usually costs less to run than gas.

What do electricity and gas cost in Ontario now?

Electricity prices are as of Nov 1, 2025, next reset Nov 1, 2026 (OEB): time-of-use 9.8¢ off-peak, 15.7¢ mid-peak and 20.3¢ on-peak per kWh; ultra-low overnight 3.9¢; tiered 12.0¢ for the first 600 kWh a month in summer, then 14.2¢. Natural gas: the Enbridge Union South supply rate is 17.7009¢/m³ as of Oct 1, 2026, and the federal carbon charge is now zero.

Is a heat pump or a gas heater cheaper to run?

A heat pump usually costs less to run. Heat pumps deliver 3–7 units of heat per unit of electricity (COP 3–7), but efficiency drops below about 10°C (US DOE Energy Saver). An older Toronto model using 2017 rates estimated June–August heating at about $569 for a heat pump versus about $1,280 for natural gas. Those dollars are out of date; use them only to rank the two. Gas heats faster in cold shoulder seasons.

How much does a pool cover save?

Covers save 50–70% of heating cost, because evaporation is the largest heat loss (US DOE). Natural Resources Canada's 2001 guide found that solar heating plus a cover adds about 2–4 weeks at each end of the season.

Do pump rules and speed settings change the bill?

Canada regulates the efficiency of new pool pumps manufactured on or after Jan 1, 2026, harmonized with the US DOE standard (NRCan, Jan 2026). Speed matters most: halving pump speed uses about one-eighth the energy (ENERGY STAR).

What about insurance and filling the pool?

  • Tell your insurer before building; brokers suggest $2M+ liability (BrokerLink, Jun 2026).
  • Inground pools usually fall under "other structures", typically 10% of the dwelling limit (BrokerLink, Jun 2026).
  • Freeze damage from improper winter closing is generally excluded (BrokerLink, Jun 2026).
  • Premiums rise about $30–$75 a month; diving boards and slides raise premiums most (Ratehub, Jun 2026).

Filling: Hamilton's 2026 upper block is $2.42 water + $2.61 wastewater = $5.03 per m³ (Alectra, 2026); Halton is $3.3441/m³ (Region of Halton, 2026). Use the calculator below for your pool's size.

How to read this: Enter your pool's length, width and average depth. The result is the water volume and what filling it once would cost at each region's 2026 water rate.

Units
Volume
75 m³ (75,000 litres)
Hamilton fill at $5.03/m³
about $377
Halton fill at $3.3441/m³
about $251

Illustrative estimate, not a quote. Hamilton rate is the 2026 upper block, $2.42 water + $2.61 wastewater per m³ (Alectra, 2026); Halton is $3.3441/m³ (Region of Halton, 2026). Burlington and Oakville are in Halton.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to run a pool in Ontario each season?

MoneySense estimates up to $1,800 a season for fibreglass, $2,000 for vinyl liner and $2,500 for concrete (Jun 2024). Boulder Design adds opening and closing at $500–$2,000 a year and hydro plus gas for pumps and heaters at $1,200–$2,800 a year (Feb 2026). These are typical market ranges, not quotes.

Is a heat pump cheaper than a gas pool heater?

Usually yes. Pool heat pumps have a COP of 3–7, though efficiency drops below about 10°C (US DOE Energy Saver). An old Toronto model with 2017 rates ranked a June–August heat pump at about $569 versus about $1,280 for natural gas. Use those numbers only to rank the options, not as current costs.

How much does a pool cover save on heating?

The US Department of Energy says covers save 50–70% of pool heating cost, because evaporation is the largest source of heat loss. Natural Resources Canada's 2001 guide found that solar heating combined with a cover adds about 2–4 weeks of swimming at each end of the season.

How much does it cost to fill a pool in Hamilton or Halton?

At 2026 rates, Hamilton's upper block is $5.03 per m³ ($2.42 water plus $2.61 wastewater) and Halton's is $3.3441 per m³. A 75 m³ pool works out to about $377 in Hamilton and $251 in Burlington or Oakville. That is illustrative arithmetic, not a quote; your meter tier and pool size change it.

Is salt cheaper to run than chlorine?

Orange Pools estimates chlorine at $600–$960 a year versus $240–$480 for salt, with a salt cell replaced every 3–7 years at $400–$700 (Jul 2026). Salt system equipment costs about $1,000–$3,000 upfront (MoneySense, 2024). Salt works with fibreglass, vinyl and concrete when the water chemistry is managed.

Does a pool raise home insurance in Ontario?

Usually. Ratehub reports premiums rising about $30–$75 a month (Jun 2026), with diving boards and slides raising them most. BrokerLink advises telling your insurer before building and suggests $2M or more in liability; inground pools typically fall under other structures at 10% of the dwelling limit, and freeze damage is generally excluded (Jun 2026).
