Landscape Designer, Landscape Architect or Contractor: Who Do I Need?

Quick answer

"Landscape Architect" is a protected title in Ontario: under the OALA Act, in force since 1984, only Full Members of the Ontario Association of Landscape Architects may use it. We found no law that protects the title "landscape designer," though Landscape Ontario offers a Certified Landscape Designer (CLD) credential. A landscape contractor builds the work and may also offer design in-house.

What is a landscape architect in Ontario?

"Landscape Architect" is a protected title under Ontario's OALA Act, which came into force in 1984:

  • Only Full Members of the Ontario Association of Landscape Architects (OALA) may use the title or the "OALA" designation.
  • A firm may use it only if a Full Member supervises the work.
  • Misusing the title is an offence under section 10(3) of the Act.

What is a landscape designer?

We found no evidence that "landscape designer" is a protected title in Ontario, so anyone can use it. Look for credentials. Landscape Ontario offers the Certified Landscape Designer (CLD) designation. It also offers other certifications, such as CLHT and CLHM.

What does a landscape contractor do?

A landscape contractor builds the project: grading, hardscape, planting, sod and so on. Many also offer design in-house, which is often called design-build.

If you're checking a contractor, Landscape Ontario screens members for education, experience and insurance before accepting them. Members sign a code of conduct, and there is a formal consumer complaint process.

How much do landscape design fees cost?

Typical market range (HomeStars Canada cost guide, undated; accessed October 2026):

WhoRate
Landscape designer$65–$195 an hour; about $2,000–$6,000 per project on average
Landscape architect, junior$60–$104 an hour
Landscape architect, principal$195–$290 an hour

Ask whether design is billed separately or included in the build price.

Which one do I need for my project?

Start with what the project involves:

  • Permits and engineering. In Oakville, changing grades may need a development engineering permit, and removing some private trees needs a permit. Homeowners are responsible for booking required permit inspections. Ask early who will prepare any drawings the town needs.
  • Local rules. Landscape Ontario notes that municipal codes and by-laws vary. Set out your goals, expectations, budget and needs before work starts.
  • Your plan. If you already know what you want built, a contractor that does design-build may cover both. If you need a full site plan for a complex property, ask whether a landscape architect is needed.

Frequently asked questions

Can anyone call themselves a landscape architect in Ontario?

No. Only Full Members of the OALA may use the title, and misusing it is an offence.

Is "landscape designer" a regulated title?

We found no evidence that it is. Look for a credential such as Landscape Ontario's Certified Landscape Designer (CLD).

Does landscape design cost extra?

It can. HomeStars lists designers at $65 to $195 an hour, or about $2,000 to $6,000 per project (typical market range, HomeStars Canada, undated). Ask whether design is included in the build price.

Do I need a landscape architect for a backyard?

We found no rule that requires one for a typical backyard. If your project changes grading or needs permits, check with your city about what drawings it needs.
